On your doorstep

Social Scenes
Discovery Heights is directly opposite Plymouth University and Plymouth College of Art, so you’re as close as can be to the action. Not only that, but the city centre is right on your doorstep so you’ve got easy access to the best bars, restaurants and shops that Plymouth has to offer.
Plymouth has a rapidly developing music and comedy scene focused on the Plymouth Pavilions - a multi-million pound complex attracting many top productions and bands - and smaller venues hosting a wealth of up-and-coming local talent.
There are a variety of bars within short walking distance, such as Skiving Scholar & Voodoo Lounge, as well as the Barbican, about 10 minutes’ walk away, with venues such as the Live Lounge and The Cider Press hosting a range of bands and open mic nights.
Discovery Heights is right in the city centre where you will find a wide range of shops, cafes and restaurants, including our new Drake’s Circus shopping centre hosting a large range of shops including fashion, shoes, gaming, books and jewellery, and many places to eat.
Being across the road from Plymouth University, Discovery Heights also gives you immediate access to Plymouth Students’ Union, which is a great place to meet new people and socialise.
What
Plymouth Hoe, only a 10-minute walk from Discovery Heights, provides breath-taking views across Plymouth Sound, one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world. Open to the public year-round, the iconic lighthouse Smeaton's Tower offers a wonderful vantage point from its lantern room.
Sir Francis Drake, intrepid explorer and local hero, is immortalised in a statue on the Hoe, situated just a few metres from the green where he finished his game before heading out to defeat the Spanish Armada in 1588.
At the eastern end of the Hoe you’ll find The Royal Citadel, the most impressive seventeenth-century fortress in Britain and for many years England’s most important defence against attack from the sea. The Citadel has been in constant military occupation since it was built and today it is home to the troops of 29 Commando Royal Artillery.
English Heritage offers tours of the Royal Citadel on Tuesdays and Thursdays from May to September.
However, if you are looking to go further afield, Plymouth train station can give direct access to neighbouring Exeter as well as links to Cornwall, Bristol, London and Reading.
Getting Active
Plymouth University offers a wide range of activities, exercise classes, sports leagues and competitions, and sports-related coaching courses which students can get involved with. There's also the opportunity to join in on one of the many fitness classes on campus including Zumba and circuit training.
Alongside this, you can play basketball, badminton, volleyball, table tennis, netball or five-a-side football at the Nancy Astor Sports Hall.
We have a long-standing relationship with Plymouth University and ensure that students living with us get access to all the fun and games available on campus via our student representatives.
The newly developed Life Centre at Central Park offers a wide range of activities as well as an Olympic standard diving facility and swimming pool, state-of-the-art gym, climbing wall and a range of fitness classes.
If ice skating is your thing, Plymouth Pavilion is also home to an ice skating rink.

Close and convenient

Travel and Transport
Discovery Heights is right in the city centre where you will find a wide range of shops, cafes and restaurants, including our new Drake’s Circus shopping centre hosting a large range of shops including fashion, gaming, books and jewellery, and many places to eat.
The great city centre location means you needn’t rely on public transport for getting to university or popular socialising venues.
If you do need to access public transport, perhaps to visit friends or relatives in neighbouring cities, then you’re not far from the city’s train station. The staff at Discovery Heights will be happy to offer guidance on where you can find trains, buses and taxis in the local area.
Supermarket
Discovery Heights has a Tesco Metro on the ground floor for convenient shopping and has all the essentials you need. Drake Circus is just a short walk away. In fact, all the shops and restaurants you could wish for are within 10 minutes’ walk of the property.
Drake Circus provides quick access to banks, building societies and chemists while also providing high-end fashion boutiques.
The Plymouth Central Library and Museum is just on the other side of the roundabout offering free entry all year round.
Larger supermarkets can be found in the city centre, including Asda, Sainsbury’s, Co-op and Spar. These are all either a short walk or taxi ride away.
Medical staff around patient
There are a number of doctor’s surgeries and dentists in short walking distance from Discovery Heights. The Zone is found in the city centre; a drop-in centre for 13-25 year olds in the city that offers free counselling services, sexual health drop-in clinics and emotional support and advice.
Derriford Hospital provides Accident and Emergency services and is located approximately four miles from Discovery Heights. The hospital provides ample car parking and is also accessible by using the number 50 service from the city centre.
We take student welfare extremely seriously and have set up student representation with the Students’ Union. As such, if you are struggling to settle at university and need help to get used to your new life, our in-house team and student representatives are here to support you.
