I am an EU student. How will post-Brexit immigration rules affect me?
If you’re already in the UK or are arriving before 31 December 2020, you need to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme to get pre-settled status, if you haven’t done so already. This will allow you to come and go freely for five years. The settlement scheme is free of charge and you can apply here.
To apply for pre-settled status, you will be asked to prove how long you have lived in the UK. You can do this by providing your National Insurance number or through alternative options, if you don’t have a NI number.
If you’re an EU student arriving in the UK after 1 January 2021, and your course is longer than six months, you will need to apply for a visa. You can apply for a visa here, if you haven’t done so already. Please note that if you are an Irish national, you are exempt from this.
If your course is less than six months, new visitor route rules apply and replace the current short-term study visa.
