Social Scenes
A short walk along the Meadows to the Quartermile, you’ll find a Sainsbury’s Local for convenience shopping. Further along, Nicolson Street is home to many great cafés, sandwich shops and bookshops, so there’s always somewhere great to go for lunch.
An eight-minute walk from Chalmers Street you’ll find Grassmarket, overlooked by Edinburgh Castle; this is the place to be for pubs and cafés. So grab a seat and watch the world go by. Princes Street is just a little further, and has all the high street stores you’d expect in Scotland’s capital city.
University of Edinburgh’s George Square campus and Teviot Hall are just minutes away, so students living at Chalmers Street are always close to the action.
What
A city of great historical beauty, Edinburgh has much to explore during your stay. Take in the history of Edinburgh Castle, Princes Street, Scott Monument, Royal Mile, Calton Hill and St Giles Cathedral. Alternatively, you can take a look at the buried past of Edinburgh by exploring below the streets at Mary Kings Close or become a part of history in Edinburgh Dungeon.
There are many other attractions worth visiting, such as Camera Obscura, Whisky Heritage Centre, Our Dynamic Earth, Royal Yacht Britannia and Edinburgh Zoo.
Museums and galleries are scattered throughout the city; the National Museum of Scotland, Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Scottish National Gallery and the Dean Galleries are all close to the city centre.

Getting Active
Edinburgh offers a range of sporting facilities to take advantage of during your time with us. The city’s universities have gym and sports facilities on campus, which are just a short walk from the property. Alternatively, there is a gym at the Meadows, just around the corner from Chalmers Street.
With the property overlooking the scenic Meadows, it’s the ideal place to go for a jog with other students.
For a change of pace, a short trip to the overlooking Pentland Hills offers skiing, cycling and climbing opportunities.
There are several international standard teams located in the city. Rugby fans will want to visit Murrayfield Stadium, home to the Scottish Rugby team. If football is more your thing, then local rivals Hibernian and Hearts have stadiums worth a day out at Easter Road and Tynecastle Stadium respectively.

Travel and Transport
Edinburgh is a very accessible city and Chalmers Street places you right at the heart of it, with great access to the city’s university facilities and vibrant nightlife.
While Edinburgh is easy to walk around, Lothian buses run a well-connected bus system that reaches all areas of the city. The nearest bus stop to Chalmers Street is just at the top of the road.
If you need to get to King’s Building you can take the free shuttle bus from Potterrow just minutes away.
Being so close to the city centre, it’s easy to walk to Waverley Train Station if you want to travel south of Edinburgh. Whilst you’re in Edinburgh, don’t miss out the opportunity to take the train from Waverley to explore the Scottish Highlands or visit Glasgow which is only an hour away.
Or, you can take the 100 bus service that links the city to Edinburgh Airport and fly to the rest of the UK and Europe.
Limited parking is available on street, subject to parking restrictions. NCP car parking is available on Castle Street and Leith Street.
Local Essentials
There are plenty of shops, banks and supermarkets within walking distance of Chalmers Street, in areas such as Leith Walk and the Royal Mile. For a more extensive range of shops, head for Princes Street and George Street which offer high street and designer stores such as Jenner’s and John Lewis.
Cinemas are close by at Fountain Park, Lothian Road, Omni Centre and Ocean Terminal, plus there’s a huge variety of bars and restaurants located throughout the city.
Princes Mall, St James Centre and Ocean Terminal also boast shopping malls if you’d rather head indoors to do your shopping.
Your Wellbeing
Your university will also offer welfare, financial and career advice to all its students and these can be found in various advice clinics across campus. Chalmers Street is in close proximity to all the campus departments so you’re never far away from the help you may need.
The nearest doctor to Chalmers Street is Gilmore Medical Practice at Tollcross. You can walk to the clinic in around five minutes.
Edinburgh Royal Infirmary is short bus ride or taxi ride away should you need to use its services. If you need to access the hospital, the staff at Chalmers Street will be happy to help you make travel arrangements.
