Social Scenes
De Montfort University Students’ Union is less than 10 minutes’ walk from Filbert Village. Home to student bars Level 1, The Lounge and The Factory, you’ll love living so close to the social hub of the university. Popular student nights are on Wednesday and Saturday, and the SU offers celebrity guest DJs and unbeatable drinks offers. The universities' Students’ Union has won the Leicester Best Bar None 'Best Independent Club' and 'Best Independent Overall Venue' for three consecutive years.
Leicester's city centre offers aspirational shopping and unique boutiques. Highcross Leicester shopping centre has some of the best shopping in the region, and the trendy boutiques and independent shops of the Leicester Lanes and St Martins Square have something for everyone. The popular Melton Road and Belgrave areas are popular with students and have a great range of shops.
If you need a break from your studies, head to the city centre where there’s a selection of pubs and clubs to suit all tastes. The Shed is a student favourite and is a great place to spot up-and-coming bands. Mosh Nightclub offers some alternative nights for those with a less mainstream taste in music. Leicester also has a great selection of late bars including Soar, The O Bar and Lloyds.
De Montfort Hall is a great alternative for a night out, with comedy, ballet, jazz, and musicals on a regular basis. Some of the country’s leading comedians perform here regularly, as well as many West End musical productions.
Leicester’s Diwali celebrations are the largest outside India, with over 35,000 enjoying the fireworks display and live cultural entertainment on stage as the festival of light marks the start of the Hindu New Year. The city also hosts the largest Caribbean Carnival outside of London. The Carnival is a celebration of Caribbean cultural identity. Held during August, you can join in the celebrations in Victoria Park, less than 10 minutes from Filbert Village.
Bede Park is a 10 minute walk away and is flanked by the Old River Soar and Grand Union Canal. Less than five minutes from Leicester city centre, the park is easily accessed from Western Boulevard or Bonners Lane off Oxford Street, and is a favourite with students from both universities. The Riverside Festival is a lively weekend of activities including boat trips, live music, a variety of food stalls from around the world.
Getting Active
Filbert Village is located across the Road from Pure Gym, which offers 24/7 access and free classes when you join. There are also opportunities to see top class professional sport in the area.
Leicester City Football Club’s King Power Stadium is just a few minutes’ walk from Filbert Village, and is visible from some rooms in the property. Filbert Village is also within walking distance of the world-famous Leicester Tigers rugby club. They were the first club to retain the Heineken Cup. Visit Welford Road and experience the excitement of match day.
Filbert Village is close to both Leicester University and De Montfort University, meaning you have great access to all the sports clubs and associations that the universities offer. De Montfort University’s Leisure Centre is just a short walk away, with state-of-the-art facilities including a 25 metre swimming pool, sauna, climbing wall, eight court sports hall, fitness suite, free weights area, and a dance studio.
Leicester also has a Rowing and Sculling club that is based on the River Soar. They have represented the city and Great Britain in multiple world-wide competitions. Students can get involved in rowing via their University Athletic Union.

Travel and Transport
Filbert Village is located on Lineker Road, off Walnut Road, just 10 minutes from The University of Leicester and De Montfort University. The city centre is 30 minutes’ walk from the property.
The city has a fantastic bus service and you can hop on a bus to town from either Walnut street or Raw Dykes Road. If you catch the Hospitals ‘Hopper’ bus you can travel for free with your NUS card.
Leicester train station is a short five minute taxi ride or a 20 minute walk across town. The station offers regular services to London as well as neighbouring cities like Derby, Nottingham and Birmingham.
Additionally, Filbert Village is located just 10 minutes’ drive from Junction 21 of the M1 motorway which connects London to the North of England via the East Midlands. With Derby and Nottingham close by, Leicester is centrally located with great neighbouring cities that are well worth visiting.
Local Essentials
The city centre, just a 20 minute walk or a five minute bus ride away, is home to all the high streets banks and shops that you’d expect in a popular university city. For convenience shopping, there’s a Costcutter on Raw Dykes Road and a Morrison’s supermarket within a 10 minute walk.
There are a range of takeaways close to the property too, including Chinese, pizza and a chip shop.
Both universities have their own libraries onsite with a range of books to satisfy the demands of your studies. Whilst there you can also use the IT services or book the group study space. Both libraries have their own bookshops and café areas serving light snacks and refreshments to keep you going throughout the day.
Your Wellbeing
Students staying at Filbert Village have access to a wide range of welfare services either provided by the universities or within the local community.
The Freemen’s Common Health Centre provides primary medical care mainly to the students and staff of the University of Leicester. The health centre is situated at the junction of University Road and Welford Road.
The Students’ Unions at both the University of Leicester and De Montfort University offer welfare advice and support to all their students and staff. The Student Advice Centre provides information and advice on a wide range of issues affecting students, such as housing, education and money. Appointments are available throughout the day or a drop in service is available most afternoons.
Filbert Village is also located close to the Leicester Royal Hospital which runs a hopper bus service to Leicester General Hospital and Glenfield.
