Social Scenes
The Grange is located on the campus of De Montfort University and just a few minutes from Leicester city centre’s most popular shopping areas, meaning you’re never more than a quick walk from the action.
Popular local student venues include The O Bar, with its famous homemade burgers and quiz nights, the Banter Café, and the Swan and Rushes.
De Montfort’s Student Union is five minutes’ walk from The Grange and is the social hub of DMU student life, with a range of bars, clubs and café’s.
Highcross Shopping Centre is just a short walk from The Grange and offers independent boutiques, famous high street stores, coffee shops, multi-level department stores, and a 12 screen cinema.
Leicester's city centre has a number of enclosed arcades, great for small and specialty shops. Leicester’s quirky arcades include the Silver Arcade, Royal Arcade, Malcolm Arcade, and Odeon Arcade - all of which are just a minutes’ walk from either the high street or Leicester Market.
What
De Montfort Hall is a great alternative for a night out, with comedy, ballet, jazz, and musicals on a regular basis. Some of the country’s leading comedians perform here regularly, as well as many West End musical productions.
Leicester’s Diwali celebrations are the largest outside India, with over 35,000 enjoying the fireworks display and live cultural entertainment on stage as the festival of light marks the start of the Hindu New Year.
The city is also home to the largest Caribbean Carnival outside of London. The Carnival is a celebration of Caribbean cultural identity, social cohesion and creative partnership. Held during August, you can join in the celebrations in Victoria Park, just 20 minutes’ walk from The Grange.
Bede Park is just a five minute walk across DMU campus and is a favourite with students from both universities. The Riverside Festival is a lively weekend of activities including boat trips, live music, a variety of food stalls from around the world!
Many students take to the banks of the River Soar on a sunny day. The Grange students have great access to all these popular areas, so you’re never far from the action.
Getting Active
The Grange is situated on campus at De Montfort University, meaning you have great access to all the sports clubs and associations that the university offers. De Montfort University’s Leisure Centre is just a short walk away, with state-of-the-art facilities including; a 25 metre swimming pool, sauna, climbing wall, eight court sports halls, a fitness suite, free weights area, and a dance studio.
Leicester is a big rowing city and has a Rowing and Sculling club based on the River Soar. The team have represented the city and Great Britain in multiple worldwide competitions.
Visit the King Power Stadium, home to Leicester City Football Club, where you can have a tour of the stadium or catch a Premiership game every other Saturday. The stadium is just a short walk from The Grange and close to one of our other Leicester properties, Filbert Village.
The world-famous Leicester Tigers rugby club are just around the corner too. The Tigers are the first club to retain the Heineken Cup. The atmosphere on match day is electric and a real must, even if you’re not a huge rugby fan.

Travel and Transport
The Grange is located on Grange Lane, on the campus of De Montfort University and 15 minutes from The University of Leicester. You can walk into the city centre within five minutes. The city has a fantastic bus service, with the nearest bus stop located on Western Boulevard. If you catch the Hospital’s ‘Hopper’ bus you can travel for free with your UHL or DMU photo ID.
Leicester train station is a 15-minute walk or a short ride in a taxi. The station offers regular services to London as well as neighbouring cities like Derby, Nottingham and Birmingham.
Additionally, The Grange is located just 10 minutes’ drive from Junction 21 of the M1 motorway which connects London to the North of England via the East Midlands.
Local Essentials
The Grange is situated on DMU Campus and benefits from having all the campus amenities close by, such as cash points, libraries and a leisure centre. The university library has its own bookshop and a café area which serves light snacks and refreshments to keep you going throughout the day.
The DMU bookshop stocks all of the core texts and a range of background reading for your course. The bookshop runs a student loyalty scheme and offers a binding service for dissertations and course work.
You can also get National Express bus tickets from the DSU shop situated on the ground floor of the campus centre. The Arts material and copy bureau can be found at Fletcher Tower, where you have access to photocopying, laminating and binding services.
For food shopping, there’s a Sainsbury’s Local and a Tesco Extra on Western Boulevard. There’s also a large Morrison’s on Freemans Park, or visit the Chinese supermarket; Wang Fung Hong.
Your Wellbeing
Students staying at The Grange have access to a wide range of welfare services either provided by the universities or within the local community. De Montfort University has its own GP Surgery situated on Mill Lane. They also offer a range of services aimed at promoting emotional wellbeing and helping you to achieve your full potential at DMU.
The Students’ Unions at both the University of Leicester and De Montfort University offer welfare advice and support to all their students and staff. The Student Advice Centre provides information and advice on a wide range of issues affecting students, such as housing, education and money. Appointments are available throughout the day or a drop in service is available most afternoons.
The Grange is also located close to the Leicester Royal Infirmary which runs a hopper bus service to Leicester General Hospital and Glenfield.
