Celebrate Chinese New Year 2026 Like a Local!

Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is one of the most important celebrations in Chinese culture - and this year it falls on Tuesday 17th February 2026.

Are you as excited as I am? Let me show you what a traditional celebration looks like, so you and your friends can create your own festive experience!

When I lived in China, New Year’s Eve was all about family. We gathered for a big reunion dinner, sharing laughter and delicious food while watching the Spring Festival Gala on TV-a nationwide tradition that brings everyone together.

How Chinese Families Celebrate

Most families spend the day before the festival preparing for this special meal. Here are some of the most popular dishes and their symbolic meanings:

  • Fish (鱼) - Represents abundance and surplus.

  • Chicken (鸡) - Symbolizes prosperity.

  • Nian Gao (年糕) - A glutinous rice cake that stands for progress and growth.

  • Bābǎofàn (八宝饭) - “Eight Treasures Rice,” a sweet dessert that’s a festive favourite.

Each dish carries good wishes for the year ahead, and the colourful table spreads happiness throughout the home.

Celebrating Away from Home

This year, as I’m away from home in Manchester, I’ll celebrate with my roommates at our student accommodation. We’ll prepare a big dinner together - thanks to one friend who’s an amazing cook! It’s a comforting way to keep traditions alive and share the joy of the festival.

Join the Festivities in Manchester

If you’re in Manchester, don’t miss the Chinese New Year Fair in Chinatown, running from Saturday, February 14 - Sunday, February 15, 2026. Expect vibrant performances, delicious street food, and unique souvenirs. It’s a cultural experience loved by both the Chinese community and locals alike.

One highlight you can’t miss? The Lion Dance - a traditional performance believed to bring good luck and fortune for the year ahead.
