Matt is a Service and Sales Advisor at the Anvil in Sheffield, our smallest Steel City home. Matt’s been with us for a few years, and knows the Anvil ‘like the back of his hand’.
Here, he tells us why he loves his job, and how he helps students like you feel at home.
“I remember seeing a documentary about a fancy British hotel, the kind of place that royalty stays at. Before a guest checks in, the manager will go around the room to see how they can make it fit for a king or queen. I like to use the time before I open reception to do this.
“I’ve been told I have a very calming manner, and using a bit of humour always breaks the ice. I explain to everyone who checks in how they can contact me or the safety team after I’ve gone home. I let them know they’re not abandoned after I’ve left.
“I’m a lot more than a tall man behind reception answering questions. I’m also a person to talk to. A friendly face you see every day, someone you can have a chat with. Because my desk is so close to the laundry room, I get to know everyone’s name and how they are doing. I also lived with Unite Students when I was studying, so I know what you’re going through. I’ve been there.
“The best thing about this job is helping people out. If you’ve got a problem and I solve it, that is a good thing. If I find you a good room and you’re happy with it, and can picture yourself living there, that is a good thing. If you’re feeling down in the dumps or a little stressed and I turn you around and cheer you up, that is a good thing. Knowing you’re happy because of how I’ve helped you, whether you know it or not… well, that is a good thing to me.
“I’m always thinking of ways to make you feel at home. I always have a pub quiz a few weeks after everybody moves in, a bit of a social to get people together. They’re difficult quizzes, but everyone enjoys them - and the prizes too!”
