Karen is a Service and Sales Advisor at Grand Central in Liverpool. But she’s also our Welfare Lead for the whole city, on hand to help if you need some support or just a cup of tea with a friendly face.

Here, she tells us why she loves coming to work every day and how she makes a difference to students like you.

“A typical day means an 8.30am start. Within five minutes of entering the building, I know what kind of day I’ll be having. Our students are very lively and they tend to tell me everything about the night before - and my day very much depends on their night!

“I work in a team of five and we get on really well. We have great relationships with our students and help them settle in by putting on movies nights, welcome parties, Fifa tournaments, pool tournaments. Our student ambassadors and residential assistants are also great at answering their questions when they first arrive.

“If we find you haven’t settled or gelled with your flatmates, we’ll look for an empty room in a more suitable flat and introduce you to the flatmates. This has worked really well over the years.

“We have a fantastic team here in Liverpool who are always looking out for our students. Our evening service and safety team are amazing at building relationships with students, so if they have any concerns then they are easy to approach.

“I never wake up thinking, ‘Oh no, I’ve got work today.’ I thoroughly enjoy my job and every day is different. We have so much fun as a team and when we do have to be serious, we all pull together.

“I feel proud knowing the difference I can make to our students’ lives, knowing that you’ll always remember your uni days, and knowing the home you’ve lived in will leave lasting memories.”
