Glasgow is second only to London in the UK for shopping. Living at Blackfriars allows you to make the most of the city, as the property sits just a five-minute walk from Argyle Street shopping centre, which boasts stores such as Next, River Island, HMV and many more.
Glasgow is a multi-cultural city and this is reflected in the fantastic range of bars and restaurants. Whether you want to sample some local cuisine, or try something new, then Glasgow has something to satisfy your appetite.
Students staying at Blackfriars are close to the wide variety of pubs and restaurants that the city offers. The Merchant City area has an abundance of fantastic dining experiences, such as Guys Restaurant and their famous Glaswegian tapas.
You can visit many of the karaoke bars such as the Horseshoe Bar and enjoy the famous Glasgow hospitality, or enjoy exotic cocktails at the Metropolitan Bar.
What
Living at Blackfriars means you are never more than 15 minutes away from the most popular student areas. For a change of scenery, students can take a short walk into Glasgow’s most historic area, George Square. Alternatively, join students and city residents alike relaxing in the riverside park at Glasgow Green.
Glasgow is famous for its music scene, with a wide range of venues that are well worth visiting. From smaller venues such as King Tuts Wah Wah Hut (where Oasis were discovered) to larger venues like the S.E.C.C (Scottish Exhibition & Conference Centre) and the O2 Glasgow, where you can see international acts like Rihanna on tour, there is something to suit all tastes.
Blackfriars is just a short walk to the 18-screen Cineworld. If you prefer the stage to the screen, then you are surrounded by theatres and the famous Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.
Getting Active
Glasgow was host city for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and has seen massive transformation and investment in its sporting facilities, such as the new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome which hosted cycling events at the games.
Blackfriars is close to The Arc Gym, situated on Glasgow Caledonian University campus. There also a number of private gyms such as Pure Gym or Virgin Active to name a few. Other local facilities include outdoor football parks just five minutes from Blackfriars at Glasgow Green.
The proximity to local university campuses means you haven’t got far to go to be involved in on campus sporting events. Check out the sports associations that you can join via your chosen university’s website.
Glaswegians are particularly passionate about football, and the city is home to three major stadiums. Hampden Park is the national football team’s stadium and is just 20-30 minutes from the city centre. Celtic Park (home to Glasgow Celtic Football Club) and Ibrox Stadium (home to Rangers Football Club) are a similar distance from the property.

Travel and Transport
Blackfriars is close to all transport links in Glasgow and is easily accessible by car, bus or train.  Glasgow’s train station is right in the heart of the city and has frequent services from various other cities across the UK. Glasgow’s Buchanan bus station, also located in the city centre, has frequent services connecting Glasgow with the rest of the UK. Glasgow also has a fast and reliable underground system.
The Glasgow underground system allows you to travel around various areas of the city in a short space of time. Blackfriars is situated close to Buchanan Street station and St Enoch station.
Other than the subway there are a number of local buses that operate in and around the city and also travel to surrounding areas.
There are a number of local buses that operate within the city, as well as the surrounding areas. These buses all leave from the bus station and many have stops near to Blackfriars, making it a great place to explore the city from.
Local Essentials
Blackfriars is very close to amenities such as local shops and banks. There are several smaller supermarkets nearby, such as an Aldi’s next door, a Tesco Metro on Ingram Street, and Morrison’s on Barrack Street.
There is also number of banks in and around the city centre, plus all the usual shops and amenities you’d expect in a large city.
Strathclyde University and Glasgow Caledonian University have on campus libraries for their students to use. Blackfriars is five minutes from Strathclyde University and less than 10 minutes' walk to Glasgow Caledonian University.
Your Wellbeing
The Glasgow Royal Infirmary is the nearest hospital, situated around 10 minutes' walk from Blackfriars and has a 24-hour Accident & Emergency department. You can also access GPs based in the health centre section at the hospital.
Should you need to visit the hospital it is advised to use any of the local taxi services. The property team at Blackfriars will be happy to provide local taxi numbers.
You can register with many local dental practices or contact the Glasgow Dental Hospital which is situated on Sauchiehall Street, 20 minutes away from Blackfriars.
If you require further welfare/financial help then you can speak to your University/College for dedicated university support centres.
