What to look for🕵️

While in first year you may have placed a little more focus on making friends and exploring your new city, in second year, the work starts ramping up. So study space or proximity to uni may be a little higher on your accommodation priorities list now.

Here are some things to consider when looking for second-year uni accommodation:

  • Privacy. Are you happy sharing spaces with flatmates? Depending on the level of alone time you prefer, you can choose between a house share or non-ensuite room in halls for maximum social time or ensuite and studio options for quieter set-ups.

  • Location. It’s time to think about convenience. Do you want to be right in the action and as close to campus as possible, or are you comfortable being a short walk or commute away?

  • Budget. The price of second-year accommodation can vary depending on whether you decide to live in a shared house or in halls. While the costs may be a little steeper for halls, Unite Students comes with additional perks like 24/7 on-site security, social spaces and the peace of mind that bills are included.

  • Flatmates. Do you know who you want to live with? Choosing who to share your space with can be a big decision. If you work best in clean, uncluttered areas, your notoriously messy friend may not be the most compatible flatmate for you.

  • Workload. It may be helpful to buddy up with students studying a similar course to you, so you’ll be on a similar wavelength when it comes to workloads and deadlines.

How to book second-year student accommodation

1. Search for accommodationLook for the perfect base to call home in your new city using our Property Search Tool. Keep an eye out for options close to your university.
2. Choose your roomOnce you’ve made your decision, it’s time to choose your pad. Happy to muck in or prefer your own space? Choose from non-ensuite options to en-suite rooms and studios.
3. Book a viewing (optional)Fancy getting a better feel for the place? Book a viewing in person (or online) to make sure you’re happy with your choice.
4. Book and payNow for the main event. Provide your bank details and get your spot booked and secured. Now you can focus on finishing first year with a bang.

In most cases, the sooner the better. This is especially important if you decide to stay in halls or if you have a major preference on location. Typically, the ‘best’ student areas can get filled up fast.

Landlords often start to advertise properties around October to November, so this is a good time to start getting a feel for where you may like to call home. You may find house hunting ramps up in January, with lots of students actively searching for houses after the Christmas holidays.

At Unite Students, our rooms are released in November for the next academic year and allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Yes! While some people decide to branch off with friends and look into shared houses, staying in halls for your second year at university can be a great option for many students. It allows you to enjoy the same perks of convenience, security, social spaces and the peace of mind that bills are included in the price.

There’s no one way to find your perfect pad for your second year. If you’re looking for shared houses, speaking to your friends, potential flatmates, or older students can help you to identify areas that you may like to live. You could also explore Unite Students accommodation options in your city for private halls where you can thrive and flourish during your second year of university.

Yes! You can request to bunk with your friends with Unite Students by making a group booking. All you need to do is fill out a group booking form, select your city, choose a flat size, and secure your rooms.
