Social Scenes
Leicester's city centre offers fantastic shopping centres and unique boutiques. The independent shops of the Leicester Lanes and St Martins Square are on your doorstep, while larger stores and a cinema can be found at Highcross Leicester. The popular Melton Road and Belgrave areas offers an Aladdin's cave of spices, jewellery, clothing, interesting gifts and fantastic food and drink.
De Montfort University Students’ Union is less than five minutes’ walk from Newarke Point.  Home to popular student venues, Level 1, The Lounge and The Factory, you’ll love living so close to the social hub of the university.
The Students’ Union has won the Leicester Best Bar None 'Best Independent Club' and 'Best Independent Overall Venue' for three consecutive years.
If you need a break from your studies, head to the city centre where there’s a selection of pubs and clubs to suit all tastes. Leicester also has a great selection of late bars like the Soar Point, Sumo and The O Bar to name but a few.
If you prefer to relax and eat out then try the Banter Café, which is very popular with students, or grab some fish and chips at the Swan and Rushes.
What
Leicester’s Diwali celebrations are the largest outside India, with over 35,000 enjoying the fireworks display and live cultural entertainment on stage as the festival of light marks the start of the Hindu New Year.
The city is also home to the largest Caribbean Carnival outside of London. The Carnival is a celebration of Caribbean cultural identity, social cohesion and creative partnership. Held during August, you can join in the celebrations in Victoria Park, just 20 minutes’ walk from Newarke Point.
De Montfort Hall is a great alternative for a night out, with comedy, ballet, jazz, and musicals on a regular basis. Some of the country’s leading comedians perform here regularly, as well as many West End musical productions.
Bede Park is just a five minute walk across DMU campus and is a favourite with students from both universities. The Riverside Festival is a lively weekend of activities including boat trips, live music, a variety of food stalls from around the world!
Many students take to the banks of the River Soar on a sunny day. Newarke Point students have great access to all these popular areas, so you’re never far from the action.
Getting Active
Newarke Point is situated on campus at De Montfort University, meaning you have great access to all the sports clubs and associations that the university offers. De Montfort University’s Leisure Centre is just a short walk away, with state-of-the-art facilities including a 25 metre swimming pool, sauna, climbing wall, eight court sports hall, fitness suite, free weights area, and a dance studio.
Why not pop down to the world-famous Leicester Tigers rugby club; the first club to retain the Heineken Cup. The atmosphere on match day is electric and a real must, even if you’re not a huge rugby fan.
Visit the King Power Stadium, home to Leicester City Football Club, where you can have a tour of the stadium or catch a Premiership game every other Saturday. The stadium is just a short walk from Newarke Point and close to one of our other Leicester properties, Filbert Village.
Leicester is a big rowing city and has a Rowing and Sculling club based on the River Soar. The team have represented the city and Great Britain in multiple worldwide competitions.

Travel and Transport
Newarke Point is located on Newark Close, on the campus of De Montfort University and 15 minutes from The University of Leicester. You can walk into the city centre in five minutes.
The city has a fantastic bus service and you can pop on a bus on Western Boulevard. If you catch the hospital’s ‘Hopper’ bus you can travel for free with your UHL or DMU photo ID.
Leicester train station is a 15 minute walk or a short ride in a taxi. The station offers regular services to London as well as neighbouring cities like Derby, Nottingham and Birmingham.
Additionally, Newarke Point is located just 10 minutes’ drive from Junction 21 of the M1 motorway which connects London to the North of England via the East Midlands.
Local Essentials
Newarke Point is five minutes from the city centre, with all the high street banks and shops that you’d expect in a popular city centre location.
Situated on DMU campus, Newarke Point has all the amenities you will need close by, including cash points, libraries and a leisure centre.
The university libraries have a range of books to satisfy the demands of your studies. Whilst there you can also use the IT services or book the group study space. Both Libraries have their own bookshops and café areas serving light snacks and refreshments to keep you going throughout the day.
For food shopping, there’s a Sainsbury’s Local and a Tesco Extra on Western Boulevard.  There’s also a large Morrison’s on Freemans Park, or visit the Chinese supermarket, Wang Fung Hong.
Your Wellbeing
Students staying at Newarke Point have access to a wide range of welfare services either provided by the universities or within the local community. De Montfort University has its own GP Surgery situated on Mill Lane. You can make appointments to see the doctor at the surgery or over the telephone. They also offer a range of services aimed at promoting emotional wellbeing and helping you to achieve your full potential at DMU.
The Students’ Unions at both the University of Leicester and De Montfort University offer welfare advice and support to all their students and staff. The Student Advice Centre provides information and advice on a wide range of issues affecting students, such as housing, education and money. Appointments are available throughout the day or a drop in service is available most afternoons.
Newarke Point is also located close to the Leicester Royal Infirmary which runs a hopper bus service to Leicester General Hospital and Glenfield.
