St Martins House is located just five minutes from De Montfort University, the city centre and St Martin’s Square shopping centre. Leicester University and the Highcross shopping centre are just 10 minutes’ walk, meaning you’re never far from the action.
The great central location in Leicester city centre means you have all the city’s most popular bars, pubs and clubs close by. The Basement is a favourite with students, with a variety of alternative music and entertainment. At the top of the road, try the Barrington Wine bar, which serves great food, wine and real ales.
St Martin’s Square is home to a range of restaurants and coffee houses, with Italian outlets such as Pizza Express and Casa Romana, and a range of independent restaurants offering Greek, Asian, Indian and European delicacies. All of these restaurants are just around the corner from St Martins House.
The St Martin’s Square shopping centre provides a collection of unique and independent shops in the heart of the city’s Lanes shopping area.
Market Street is at the top of King Street and provides a relaxed, pedestrianised area in which to shop and eat, along with jewellers, clothes shops, friendly coffee shops and a Fenwick department store. The nearby Belvoir Street is also worth a look with a range of restaurants, bars and nightclubs.
Leicester is a thriving multi-cultural city with a range of events going on throughout the year. The city holds the largest Caribbean Carnival outside of London. The Carnival is a celebration of Caribbean cultural identity and is held during August. St Martins House residents are only a short walk from the celebrations in Victoria Park.
Leicester Diwali celebrations are the largest outside India, with over 35,000 enjoying the fireworks display and live cultural entertainment on stage as the festival of light marks the start of the Hindu New Year.
For a range of comedy, ballet, musicals and theatrical performances, head to the De Montfort Hall with events all year round. The venue is close to the city centre and features some of the country’s best-known live acts.
Bede Park is a 15 minute walk from St Martins House across De Montfort campus and is a favourite with students from both of Leicester’s universities. The Riverside Festival held here is a lively weekend of activities including boat trips, live music, a variety of food stalls from around the world.
Getting Active
Both of the city’s universities have a huge range of sports clubs and associations that students can affiliate themselves with. St Martins House is right next to De Montfort University campus and a short walk from Leicester University, so you’re never far from the action.
There are some great sports facilities on campus at DMU. The De Montfort Leisure Centre has a 25m swimming pool, sauna, climbing facilities, eight indoor courts, and a gym and dance studio. St Martins House residents are just a few minutes’ walk from these facilities.
Leicester City Football Club’s King Power Stadium is just a few minutes’ walk from St Martins House, and is visible from some rooms in the property. The property is also within walking distance of the world-famous Leicester Tigers rugby club. They were the first club to retain the Heineken Cup. Visit Welford Road and experience the excitement of match day.
Leicester also has a Rowing and Sculling club that are based on the River Soar. They have represented the city and Great Britain in multiple world-wide competitions. Students can get involved in rowing via their University Athletic Union.

Travel and Transport
St Martins House is located on King Street in the historic centre of Leicester. The city is easily accessible both on foot and by bus. The nearest bus service to the property goes from Welford Road. Students can travel for free with a UHL or DMU photo card.
St. Margaret’s bus station is a few minutes’ walk from the shops and Highcross Leicester. National Express offer nationwide coach services from here and you can purchase your tickets from the DSU shop on the De Montfort University campus.
Leicester train station is situated on London Road, a short 10 minute walk across town. The station offers regular services to London as well as neighbouring cities like Derby, Nottingham and Birmingham.
Additionally, St Martins House is located just 15 minutes’ drive from Junction 21 of the M1 motorway which connects London to the North of England via the East Midlands.
Local Essentials
St Martins House benefits from several nearby newsagents, cafés, takeaways and coffee shops. There are more takeaways just around the corner on Welford Road, as well as Leicester Food and Wine, and another newsagent on Princess Street.
King Street is also home to Sloane coffee shop and Mr Brown’s, so students staying at St Martins House have plenty of options.
You can find a Tesco Express on Belvoir Street, and a Sainsbury’s Local on Regent Road.
A couple of streets away on Bishops Street you will find Leicester central library, which is open till 7 pm. There’s a collection of high street banks around Horsefair Street and Granby Street including Halifax, Natwest and Lloyds TSB.
Your Wellbeing
Students staying at St Martins House have access to a wide range of welfare services either provided by the universities or within the local community.
De Montfort University’s health centre is based on campus at Mill lane, just a 10 minute walk from St Martins House. The surgery is there to provide health care service and support to all the universities' students and staff. You can book your appointments by telephone, face to face or online.
The Students’ Union at De Montfort University offers welfare advice and support on a wide range of issues affecting students, such as housing, education and money. Appointments are available throughout the day or a drop in service is available most afternoons.
St Martins House is also located close to the Leicester Royal Hospital which runs a hopper bus service to Leicester General Hospital and Glenfield.
