How to Keep Your Belongings Safe on Public Transport as a Student
As a student, you probably rely on public transport every day - whether that’s hopping on the bus to campus, catching a train into the city centre, or using the tram late at night. Even if you have a car at uni, public transport is often quicker, cheaper and far more convenient.
But when you’re commuting with valuable items like your laptop, phone or tablet, a small mistake can quickly turn into an expensive one if something goes missing.
To help you travel with confidence, we asked Howden, Unite Students’ chosen student insurance partner, to share their top tips on keeping your belongings safe while using public transport.
1. Stay Alert When You’re On the Move
Students are statistically more likely to be targeted by thieves, particularly in busy areas and on public transport. When travelling, try to stay aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your belongings, especially during peak times or when services are crowded.
2. Carry Gadgets in a Secure Bag
Instead of holding your phone, tablet or laptop in your hands, use a strong, secure bag that keeps everything zipped up and protected. Bags with sturdy fastenings and inner compartments can help prevent items from being accessed without you noticing.
3. Avoid Putting Your Bag Down
On longer journeys, it can be tempting to place your bag on the floor or under a seat—but this makes it easier to forget or for someone else to take.If you do need to put it down:
Keep it within sight
Loop the strap around your leg or foot
This simple habit can reduce the risk of opportunistic theft.
4. Only Take What You Actually Need
Heading into town for a short trip? You probably don’t need your laptop, tablet and phone with you. Leaving unnecessary valuables at home minimises risk and gives you one less thing to worry about while travelling.
5. Don’t Display Valuables Unless Necessary
On shorter journeys, try not to get expensive gadgets out where other passengers can see them. This helps avoid drawing attention to what you’re carrying. If you need to work on a longer trip, just be extra aware of where your bag and belongings are at all times.
6. Create a Simple Travel Checklist
If you’re prone to forgetting things, a checklist can be incredibly helpful. Before getting off the bus or train, quickly check that you still have everything you came with—laptop, phone, charger, headphones and keys.
7. Label Your Valuables
Adding a discreet sticker with your contact details to items like laptops or tablets can help reunite you with them if they’re found by an honest person. This is especially useful for devices frequently taken out on campus or on public transport.
8. Always Password‑Protect Your Devices
A strong password can be a major deterrent to thieves and helps protect your personal data. Make sure all devices are secured with passwords, PINs or biometric locks so your information stays safe even if an item is lost or stolen.
9. Install a Device Tracking App
Apps such as Find My iPhone and similar tracking features for other devices can significantly increase your chances of recovering lost items. Make sure these features are switched on before you need them.
10. Make Sure Your Belongings Are Insured Outside Your Accommodation
Some universities include insurance for belongings kept inside your student accommodation, but this usually won’t cover items when you’re out and about.Having cover that extends beyond your flat means you’re protected if something unexpected happens—like your phone being stolen on the bus. With the right cover, approved claims can be resolved quickly, helping you replace essential items sooner.
What Are You Covered for at Uni?
If you’re staying with Unite Students, contents insurance is included with your booking through our partner Howden. This cover protects your belongings while they’re inside your accommodation.
However, it’s important to remember that this cover does not automatically apply when you’re travelling or off‑site.
Do You Need Extra Cover?
Ask yourself:
How often do you take your phone out with you?
Do you use your laptop or tablet in libraries, cafés or on public transport?
Will you be working on assignments while commuting?
If the answer is yes, extending your insurance to cover your belongings outside your accommodation can give valuable peace of mind - so you can focus on uni life without worrying about worst‑case scenarios.
